Engagement
The letter comes first.
No file is opened on a conversation alone.
The engagement letter names the client, the work, the fee, and what the office will not do. A contingency matter also includes the written percentage, how costs are treated, and the Statement of Client’s Rights.
If another firm will share the work, that firm signs the same contract. The client gets a copy.
Email, a web form, and a first phone call do not create an attorney-client relationship.
